and this masterpiece will tear you apart | eli adored places like this. small, but not completely empty. quiet, but not utterly silent. they were known to house a more level-headed population, where the girls didn't constantly stumble around drunk and desperate, and hitting on anything with two legs wasn't the highlight of the guys' night. when provided with this warmer kind of atmosphere, it not only made it easier for him to pay attention, but it also enabled customers to pay attention, as well - something he genuinely appreciated. sure, most of them, even if they did watch, did so because of either his appearance or their boredom, for improvisational blues guitar was going out of style, especially when presented toward younger crowds. he did always managed to catch the eye of a few, though, and those were the ones who tended to just stick around and actually listen, or come up to him to chat after he was done. it contented him. performing always did. but, one day he wanted to be bigger than playing in bars. he wanted people to hear the name 'elias roscoe' and recognize it.
it was a dream far off, but he believed he was passionate enough to get there. eventually. he'd spent the last eighteen years or so dreaming, after all. there was no use in chickening out now, especially when he'd passed up college to focus on his music, and left his family behind for the same reason. it would mean that he surrendered it all for nothing, and that wasn't something he should have to settle for.
with his mind drifting, he pulled his attention back to his music. playing was something that had become a rather... absentminded activity. that's how it should be, he thought. he liked being able to let go and let his mind and fingers communicate without him and do as they pleased. it led to a much more interesting show than thinking about it too much. when he deliberately concentrated and tried to be impressive, he usually just ended up blowing it. he would forget things, be at a loss as to what he would want to put in next. with thought, it became less emotional and more technical - and blues, by definition was emotional. his eyes directed down to his left hand, but not actually registering what he was doing, he avoided the glances others shot him. elias was most certainly not a shy person, but eye contact while performing was extremely awkward - or so he thought - and so until he was finished he did his best to keep himself away from the situation.
snatching a few lingering thoughts from his imagination, his racing fingertips slowed and quieted, tying up the last few chords. he leaned into the microphone that'd been put before him, but he never really used, and ushered a thank you past his lips, accompanied by a faint smirk, before he set his instrument down beside him.

natasha was working, not that that was unusual; she was at the bar most nights, not because she had to be, but because she chose to be. she was one of the rare people who liked their jobs - something about the bar was more homey than her actual apartment. it was small, usually pretty quiet, social, friendly, dim. she liked it there. she'd been there for a couple hours, serving drinks and chatting up the customers - her boss liked it when the girl bartenders flirted with the guys, which she didn't have a problem with. flirting was practically her favorite hobby. besides kick boxing. but they both went hand in hand in her opinion - it was about being cunning, outsmarting your opponent, seeing who would crack first. flirting usually had a more satisfying out come. running a hand through her hair, natasha grabbed a glass, filling it with beer, the golden liquid glowing slightly in the light. she slid it across the bar in exchange for a few dollars, and she smirked lightly. " thanks, hun. " she winked at them before grabbing a rag to wipe down the bar. it was pretty slow tonight, and she was taking the time to appreciate everything at the bar - including the music. tonight, a particularly handsome man was playing particularly fantastic music. she was enjoying admiring him - there was something about him. he was so.. disinterested. it fascinated her, how he seemed to ignore the crowd, though she could see that every few minutes he seemed to glance around, like he was making a conscious effort not to. she narrowed her eyes at him slightly, a smirk pulling at her lips again. she was going to talk to this man. the man who made beautiful music. she loved the blues, jazz, all that. although she had been born in texas, she'd been carted to louisiana all her life, and had been raised with the music and lifestyle. she loved it. she loved the music; it spoke to her. and this man, it was like he was looking right into her soul, and all he was doing was moving his fingers against the frets.
she watched him, absent mindedly filling orders when they were placed. she would be lying if she said it wasn't just his music that captivated her - but it wasn't just his good looks either. she liked how he gave himself to the music, even if it wasn't immediately obvious. she liked him, although she had never met him. she assumed they would get along. he didn't look like the rambling jackasses that tended to wander into the bar every night - he looked intellecutal, charming. he finished his song, there was applause, and natasha clapped, too. he set his guitar down, and she took her chance. tousling her hair lightly she stepped from behind the bar, calling back to her fellow bartender that she was taking her break. she made her way through a few tables and walked up to the small stage area. she kept the smirk firmly in place - it was her trademark. the famous natasha smirk - she was always causing trouble, and that was a telltale sign that she was up to no good. she was gonna get her game on. " hi there. " she greeted him, keeping her expression friendly, although the mischeif peeked through. although, she always looked mischevious. he shouldn't have been worried. she raised her eyebrows slightly, curious. " how long have you been playing? " she'd been playing guitar and piano since she was a kid, but she'd never mastered blues. as much as she loved it, it wasn't in her soul like it was his. she looked at the guitar pointedly so he would know what she was talking about, although there really was no question. she appraised him lightly and smiled. " i'm natasha, by the way. " at that point she would shut her mouth and listen - she knew how to play the game, and she always came out on top.
