despite the fact that summer had just ended, it was hot outside. sabrina trucked downtown, just having finished going out to lunch with a few of her friends. sabrina pushed the sleeves of her jacket up to her elbows, squinting in the blinding sunlight. it was always like this in dallas - it was either sickeningly hot, or frustratingly cold. fall was the only in between time, because even spring seemed to be boiling most years. she was grateful that winter would be taking hold soon - there would be a nice two or three months where temperatures would stay at a wonderful median, just cold enough to wear a sweater, but warm enough where you didn't need one. someone honked as she walked and she ignored them - dallas had the worst driving record in the state, and that did not exclude the piggish guys behind the wheel. despite the pervish drivers, she loved downtown - it wasn't as big as most people would have suspected it would be, especially for a city with three million people, and it was definitely not the best neighborhood around, but it was fascinating and adventurous. she walked past a hotel just as a limo pulled up - a lot of people stayed in that hotel, she knew - and rounded a corner, looking up at the buildings. she had lived in dallas almost her entire life, but she had never lost her fascination with the city. it had so much to offer, and she loved it.
of course, if she ever got the chance to go live in the country, she probably wouldn't have refused. she was born in beeville, a town about an hour from corpus christi, a small town, and she had to admit that she missed it. the country definitely had its' benefits - horses, mostly. that was one of her main goals in life, to own a horse farm when she was older, settle down have a nice family, get to train the horses on the side. she had even considered a racing farm, but she wasn't sure. caught up in her own thoughts, sabrina did not see the person walking straight for her, and they collided. it knocked the breath out of her - they had both been walking fast, and she teetered on her heels, slamming into the pavement. " oh, wow. that hurt. " she mumbled to herself, rubbing the back of her head where it had made impact with the asphalt. her ears rang and she blinked as stars bloomed across her vision - she considered the fact that she probably had a concussion and sat up, keeping her hand at the back of her head. she squeezed her eyes shut. " aw, hell. " she muttered, opening her eyes to look at the person across from her. " are you okay? " she asked them, although her voice was strange - she felt like she was about to pass out, and she tried to remember where the nearest hospital was. or the nearest icepack.

summer was actually kesler's favorite time of the year, next to winter. they were both so different, but at the same time, he loved them both equally. he couldn't decide which one he liked more, in other words. summer, because he got to work with his shirt off and enjoy riding in trails with at least a little bit of shade, instead of where the sun would just beat down on him all day long as he worked with the horses. winter because it meant at least a little bit of time off, and more indoor work and ground work. but honestly, kesler didn't care what season it was. all he enjoyed was working, and when he got time off, he didn't really want to take it. but his boss would always insist, and he would. of course, that couldn't stop him from visiting once or twice a week when he got the month off. yeah, training and riding and just horses were his life. he didn't mind that, though. he doubted he could find anything he liked more than his job - after all, he pretty much told everyone he was married to it. his wife was 'loyal', and would always be there for him if he ever needed work. all of his friends knew that, and didn't try to take him away from it, except at night. at night, it was a different story. parties were another thing kesler loved, and that was exactly what he was about to be doing.
he was in a hurry, people could obviously see that as he pushed against the walls of buildings. the streets were busy, but the sidewalks weren't as bad as usual. maybe it was the heat. he was used to it, after being here for a while, but it still bothered him that it was pretty much always like this. as he walked, his mind was busier than usual. he had a lot on his mind. for one, his father was coming to visit from back home in just a couple of days, and he'd either have to hire someone to clean his house for him, or do it himself. he was going for the cleaning person in that moment of time. the second thing was that he'd have to be up earlier than normal the next morning, but he'd most likely be awake until that time at his friend's party. he had grocery shopping to do, he had to buy food for the horses, he had to pick up- "shit!" he cussed as he crashed right into someone, falling back and against the sidewalk. he closed his eyes, muttering under his breath and not moving for a moment or two. kesler heard the person he had crashed into speak, and slowly opened his eyes. well, she was pretty. hell, she was absolutely stunning. he slowly chuckled, feeling a little sick to his stomach from the crash, and then shrugged. "i'm sure i'll be fine. are you all right, beautiful? took quite a tumble. should watch where you're going." he laughed a little.

her head pounded painfully and she winced - she'd had a concussion before, and she definitely didn't want to go back to that. it had been pretty painful. sabrina pushed her fingers through her hair, massaging her scalp slightly as she tried to ease the throbbing. she imagined that she was bleeding, although she knew she wasn't. sabrina opened her eyes and eyed the man before her - he was incredibly handsome, and she found herself captivated for a moment, before the pain brought her back to reality. she swore again, wincing. he spoke, and she had to make herself focus, to listen to his words so she could take a moment to comprehend them. i'm sure i'll be fine. are you all right, beautiful? took quite a tumble. should watch where you're going. he laughed, and she managed to smile in response. she needed an icepack and a glass of rum, pronto. sabrina managed to stand, but she wobbled and had to catch herself against the building, leaning against it slightly. she blinked slowly - black spots bloomed across her vision, invading her thoughts with complete nausea. " i think i'm going to pass out. " she told him simply, raising a hand to her forehead, then to the back of her head where she could already feel a bump rising. she stood there for a moment, supporting herself on the building, before she stumbled forward slightly, getting her bearings. okay, hospitals, where was the nearest hospital? she brushed past him, blinking back stars, trying to remember where she was. at the moment, she could barely even remember her own name. she had taken quite a hit - and somewhere in the back of her mind she knew she needed to get it checked out.
she turned to look at the attractive man who had run into her, and she looked at him slowly. " i don't know your name. " she told him, before pushing her hair out of her eyes. " can you please take me to a hospital? " her voice was out of focus - she sounded like she was going to pass out any second, but she clung to consciousness, looking at him. it was kind of ridiculous, how she had a concussion and all she had done was run into someone. but she supposed things happened for a reason - maybe this boy would turn out to be her best friend or soul mate or something. although she couldn't concentrate on that thought for long. she wondered what he would do if she passed out cold - because the darkness was gripping her vision, closing in. she tried to blink the spots away, but they refused to recede. oh, god. i'm about to pass out in front of a total stranger. she thought to herself. sabrina tried to wake herself up, and her stomach lurched as vertigo gripped her. no, she was going under. she managed to say softly " catch me, please. " before her eyes closed and she passed out cold, falling forwards. she was definitely going to have a headache when she woke up.

kesler didn't like the way she was looking at that moment - sick. he frowned a little bit and ran a hand through his hair, unsure of what he was even supposed to do. he dealed with horses, he didn't deal with people. he didn't even have that many friends. he couldn't help but smile slightly at the cussing, though. cussing always meant the person was all right, didn't it? when she wobbled, his eyes went wide, and he stepped closer to the young woman. kesler reached out to help her, but she had made it to the building quicker than he could help. "hey. no, you're not. come on..." he muttered, really not liking this. what the hell was he supposed to say or do? she'd be fine.. wouldn't she? he honestly had no idea. "fuck," he muttered, low enough so that she couldn't hear. his head was pounding, but that's all that hurt. and maybe his ass, but that was probably from riding earlier in the day. when she started to try to walk, his eyes widened and he turned to walk after her. "look, love, you probably shouldn't be walking..." he said, but trailed off, watching her. he couldn't just leave her alone, after all. he had things to do. but then again, it wasn't like he was ever on time. so he stayed, just to make sure she was all right. "what the hell," he thought, and leaned against the wall when she stopped and turned around. she reminded him a lot of a model - she was skinny, she had the right posture, and her clothes were even really nice. was she wealthy? maybe. but he wasn't one to even know how to read anyone. he wasn't good at it, and he mostly just picked up on things from hanging out with them or talking to them.
kesler's eyebrows furrowed in worry at her words, watching her. her hand caught his eye, and that's what he watched when she moved the hair out of her eyes. "kesler," he replied to her words, but knew she probably wouldn't even remember when she woke up. and from the sound of her voice? that was going to be happening soon. "shit shit shit shit." kesler knew he should have left a few minutes ago, when he had the chance. now he had to stay, make sure she made it home or to a hospital safe. he moved closer to her, to rest a hand on her shoulder. "hey. hey, can you look at me? what's your name?" he asked her, frowning deeply, but all she said was the soft words that sounded like 'catch me'. his eyes went wide, but he didn't let her fall. he caught her in his arms, groaning. how did he get himself into this? he cussed under his breath and held her close to him as he set her down on the ground. from there, she looked completely passed out. he pressed fingers into his temples, closing his eyes. "hospital, hospital..." he repeated quietly and picked her up in his arms bridal style. he made his way slowly to the hospital, trying not to jostle her around too much. he had no idea what her name was, but he tried his best to get her help. half an hour later she was laying down on a hospital bed, kesler sitting in the chair in that room. his arms were crossed, and he was half asleep, waiting to see if and when she'd wake up.

sabrina's head hurt - a lot. she was aware that she was laying on a bed that was not hers - it was far too stiff, uncomfortable, cold. her eyebrows furrowed slightly, but she didn't open her eyes. she listened, trying to get her bearings. her head still pounded, and she tried to remember what had happened. she just remembered walking down the street. that was it. this bothered her, and she swallowed hard, searching through her memories with more determination. some guy - a very handsome guy, but that was it. she just remembered his face. and something that had to do with "kesler" though that made absolutely no sense to her. as she woke up a little more she decided to open her eyes, although she was exhausted and her body begged her not to. the ceiling was strange looking - industrial. where the hell was she? she could vaguely hear people moving past wherever she was, beeping, low voices. what the hell? she sat up a little, moving her arms to support herself on her elbows. she was in a hospital bed, a blanket half heartedly pulled around her; she was grateful to see that she still had her street clothes on. a curtain was pulled around her bed, making a kind of makeshift room, and monitors beeped beside her. she looked down at her arm suddenly - oh, god, needles. her eyes widened and she reached over, ripping the IV from her arm quickly. she looked around and jumped when she realized someone had been sitting next to her the entire time. she stared at him for a second. " ...... uh. " she scrutinized him - he was the man from the street. " what happened? " she asked him, rubbing her arm where the needle had been - it ached dully. she looked past him just as the doctor pushed through the curtain, a clipboard in hand. he smiled at her quickly. well, hi there. she just looked at him, sitting up, and he continued. first, i'm gonna need your name. that puzzled her for a moment - she couldn't remember it for a moment, and that scared her. she looked at the doctor for a moment, trying to find her voice. " i'm.. " it came to her after a moment. " sabrina. sabrina ashford. " she told him as if she weren't entirely sure. he scribbled that down on his clipboard and asked her the typical questions about insurance - yes she had it, did she need financial aid, no her parents would pay for it, had she ever had a concussion before, yes.
he picked his little flash light up. follow the light with you eyes. he instructed and she did as she was told, wincing slightly at the glare of the light. he clicked it off and wrote more stuff. she looked at kesler briefly - why had he stayed? she found that incredibly charming; most guys would have ran off. alright the doctor began. so most of your symptoms have subsided, you're ready to go. you're gonna have a headache for a couple of days, but some tylenol should fix that. he smiled at her, patted her leg briefly and told her she could go. he left, and she gratefully threw the blanket off of herself, moving to the edge of the bed, slipping off. she had to balance herself on the bed railing, getting her sense of balance back. " head rush. " she muttered, slipping her shoes on. she turned to look at the man, not at all shy, although she was still a bit disoriented. sabrina smiled at him gratefully. " thank you. for bringing me to the hospital. " she told him, holding her hand out to shake his. " i'm sabrina. and uh, i think.... you're kesler, right? " her eyebrows raised slightly - she was almost positive that she was correct, but she had just taken a hit to the head. she couldn't be entirely sure. she ran a hand through her hair, then winced. " yeah, so passing out wasn't exactly my best idea. sorry about that. " she added, making a face sheepishly. she didn't know what to say to him - if the circumstances had been a little more normal and she hadn't gotten a concussion, she would have flirted with him, asked him to get a drink sometime. but she'd passed out in his arms, and forced him to take her to a hospital. it wasn't exactly prime flirting time. she looked around after a second awkwardly. " wanna get out of here? "

kesler was pretty much napping next to her bedside, waiting for the beautiful girl to wake up. he wasn't sure why he was even waiting. he could just leave, and she'd forget about him sooner or later. he didn't need to make sure she was all right - the doctors would do a good job of that. he woke up as he heard the sheets on the bed being moved a little bit, and woke up at that, sitting up and stretching slightly. there, she was awake now. kesler could just leave, and tell her 'you're welcome.' but honestly, he didn't want to do that. he wanted to talk to her. so he glanced at her once again, and noticed that she was now staring at him. her words made him smile just a little bit, and he chuckled. he was about to explain, but then she looked away and he looked the same way. there was the doctor, and this was the perfect time to slip out. but he sat back in his chair, lacing his fingers together and placing them on his left leg, tapping his foot on the floor softly, trying not to make a lot of noise while doing that. when he heard her name, he made note of that just so he could call her by it later, tell her that it was his fault and he'd make it up to her or something like that. dinner, a movie. maybe just buying her a new pair of shoes. she was a girl, girls liked shoes... right? kesler sighed a little bit as the interview with the doctor proceeded to go one. it felt like forever that he stayed, and then kesler finally heard the words that the girl - sabrina - would be all right and she was able to go. kesler yawned a bit when he left, stretching again and then glancing back over at the blonde.
kesler listened to her words and chuckled at the head rush part, standing up slowly and rolling his shoulders, a bit stiff from sleeping in a chair. definitely his favorite place to stay - an uncomfortable hospital chair. he crossed his arms and raised his eyebrows, before nodding a little bit. "you're welcome. it's nice to meet you, sabrina." kesler nodded, and reached out to take her hand in his, shaking softly before stuffing his hands in his pockets. "yup. kesler. at least you remember, that definitely means it wasn't as bad as it could have been." he smiled a little more, and then laughed. "seriously, it's fine. you hit me pretty bad though. or i hit you. i think we should just agree it wasn't either of our faults," he said simply, and then shrugged a little bit. she seemed slightly uncomfortable, and he didn't want her to feel like that. so when she asked if he wanted to get out of there, he nodded quickly. "please. i hate hospitals," he muttered, and opened the curtain for sabrina. as they walked out of the hospital, he played with his keys, which were in his pocket. kesler turned a bit, walking in front of her, facing her all the time. "so, you were in a hurry. where to? if you'd like to tell me, i mean. but i can take you there if you want," he shrugged a little more, unsure of what else to say. damn it. he wasn't good with girls, not at all.
